Position Description

California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is one of 23 campuses in the California State University system. Located equidistant between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, CSUSB serves the expansive San Bernardino and Riverside Counties (also known as the Inland Empire), whose more than four million residents live in 27,000 square miles – an area larger than 10 states. Voted the most beautiful CSU campus by students, CSUSB is nestled in the foothills of the picturesque San Bernardino Mountains, which provide a stunning backdrop to the 441-acre park-like campus. Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Services in the Division of Student Affairs, the Director of the Student Health Center will be expected to inspire staff and students with a strong vision, create opportunities for innovation, and leverage partnerships to raise the profile of the AAAHC-accredited Student Health Center across campus. Specifically, the director will be expected to:

  • provide leadership, vision, and direction for, and oversee a multidisciplinary staff of approximately 38 individuals in clinical services, nursing, ancillary services, health education and promotion, and administrative services;
  • assess student health and wellness needs, evaluate the quality and effectiveness of programs and services, and explore and implement innovative practices to deliver high quality, efficient, and culturally competent programs, services, and operations;
  • manage a complex budget with full fiscal accountability;
  • partner with the leadership of Counseling & Psychological Services in the operation and maintenance of the Student Health Center building and its key functional and technological infrastructure, including policies and procedures for building security, development and implementation of long-range plans for building maintenance and repair, and strategic planning for growth in services to align with student enrollment;
  • ensure compliance with policies and procedures with federal, state, CSU, local, legal and ethical standards, best practices, regulatory and statutory requirements, licensing requirements, and accreditation standards;
  • serve as a member of the University Emergency Operations Center, establishing and implementing protocols with on- and off-campus agencies in medical disaster and pandemic planning;
  • maintain collaborative working relationships with University Police Department, Risk Management, Environmental Health & Safety, Student Affairs Departments, faculty, staff, administrators and community agencies to assure high-quality provision of health and wellness services that support student development, academic achievement and student success;
  • provide leadership for the Campus Health Oversight Committee and the Student Health Advisory Committee, in addition to university-wide leadership to advance health and wellness initiatives and programs for students, employees and the community at large within a multicultural framework; and
  • represent the campus on appropriate California State University system-wide committees and in regional and national professional organizations.

A master’s degree in one of the health-related management fields, including Business Administration, Health Administration, Public Health, or a related discipline from a regionally accredited university is required. In addition, a minimum of five years of progressively responsible health care management experience, including 3 years of supervisory/managerial experience, including the design, development and direction of health-related programs and services and responsibility for quality of medical practice and outreach, fiscal management, budget development, and contractor/vendor relationships will be expected of the director. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to outstanding, student-centered healthcare in higher education, direct experience in a multidisciplinary practice model, and a significant and visible record of being an innovative leader and effective manager in healthcare delivery. Candidates must have a collaborative and strategic spirit, with the disposition to partner and work closely with colleagues across all areas in the Division of Student Affairs and external partnering units. The ability to work well with and support a diverse student body and the understanding of a complex healthcare market place as exists in Southern California will be central to these efforts.
